Sodium note

Starting with water-packed, no-salt-added tuna instead of the standard canned version removes the largest source of sodium in classic tuna salad.

Ingredients

  • 2 (5-ounce) cans no-salt-added tuna in water, drained well
  • 1/3 cup plain unsalted Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (unsalted or reduced-sodium)
  • 2 stalks celery, finely diced
  • 2 tablespoons finely diced red onion
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Lettuce cups or whole-grain bread, for serving

Method

  1. 1

Flake the drained tuna into a mixing bowl with a fork, breaking up any large chunks.

  2. 2

Add the Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, celery, red onion, dill, lemon juice, and Dijon mustard.

  3. 3

Stir gently until everything is evenly combined and creamy.

  4. 4

Season generously with black pepper and taste, adding more lemon juice if you'd like extra brightness.

  5. 5

Serve scooped into lettuce cups, piled on whole-grain toast, or alongside sliced cucumbers and unsalted crackers.

Substitutions

  • Use avocado mashed in place of mayonnaise for a dairy-free, creamy alternative.
  • Sweet pickle relish can replace red onion for a milder, tangier bite.
  • Fresh tarragon or chives can stand in for the dill.

Tips

  • Let the salad chill for 15 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld.
  • A diced hard-boiled egg stirred in adds protein and richness.
  • Swap in canned no-salt-added salmon for a change of pace with the same method.
